Ways to strengthen your immune system

With flu season slowly creeping and people running to get their flu shots, I thought I'd share the natural way to strengthen you immune system.

Ginger, cinnamon, turmeric and other warming spices have amazing healing powers. Work them into your diet including soups or stews.

Antiviral and antibacterial, the traditional Native American remedy contains polysaccharides that can raise levels of infection-fighting white blood cells, among other functions. To reap those benefits, Natural medicine recommends getting 3 grams of Echinacea purpurea (a well-studied species) daily when you're sick, reducing the dose as you start to feel better. The only people who should be careful about dosage are those who have severe allergies to the aster family of plants.

Sizing up 25 studies on over-the-counter cough medicine, a recent research review published in "The Cochrane Library" determined that there's no good evidence for or against the effectiveness of formulas such as Robitussin and Mucinex.

For natural, reliable cough relief, try a tea recipe recommended by Tieraona Low Dog, M.D., director of education at the University of Arizona's Program in Integrative Medicine. It features thyme, which alleviates chest congestion and supports respiratory function, along with throat-soothing honey, sage, and vitamin-C-rich lemon.

Cough-Control Tea1. Pour hot water over 2 teaspoons organic lemon rinds, 1 teaspoon sage, and 1/2 teaspoon thyme. (Dried or fresh herbs can be used.)

2. Cover and steep for 15 minutes.

3. Strain tea, then add juice of 1/2 lemon and 1 tablespoon honey.

4. Drink two to three cups daily for cough relief.

A 2001 study discovered that participants who popped a garlic supplement daily from November to February were less likely to get colds than those who took a placebo. But Natural health suggests going for the fresh herb, both in preventing and banishing colds. Crushing up a clove, mixing it with olive oil and lemon juice, and putting it on your meal or salad is something easy for people to do every day. When you're sick, down at least three cloves of garlic daily. Besides salad dressing, try mashing up a clove and spreading it on toast; eating a few sprigs of parsley or mint afterward will help stave off garlic breath.

As with any type of homeopathic medicine, oscillococcinum aims to restore health by delivering a highly diluted dose of a substance that produces symptoms characteristic of the illness being treated. Here, that substance is extract of muscovy duck heart and liver, identified by homeopaths as reservoirs of the influenza virus. A 1998 study from the British Homeopathic Journal gave either oscillococcinum or a placebo to 372 patients with the flu, finding that the remedy both lessened their symptoms and shortened the duration of sickness. If you're intrigued by the "like cures like" approach to wellness, Natural health recommends using one or two tubes of oscillococcinum once or twice weekly for the flu, in combination with other immune-enhancing supplements (such as echinacea or elderberry)

Build up your immune defenses with a plant-based diet high in vitamin C (think kiwi, citrus, and broccoli), stay hydrated and drink green or black tea both shown to aid the immune system.
Become slightly germ-obsessed, at least for the winter months. Wash your hands and wipe down kitchen and high traffic surfaces as often as you can.
Be sure to get plenty of rest and relaxation; chronic stress and sleep deprivation are both known to wear down your immunity.
Then, when a cold or flu does strike, act fast. No matter what you use as treatment, start taking it right away, as viruses duplicate within the first 48 hours of symptoms. Here were some choices for the best ways to keep colds and flu at bay. All are available at natural-foods stores; a few you might already have in your kitchen.

So what are some of your reliable over the counter or natural remedies you do?

Food post....aren't those the best. What I'm devouring lately.

I love blog world. You come across amazing blogs that introduce you to so many great things. My favorite is food blogs, not just food but good for you food blogs. My mom was always into healthy eating. We never carried soda in our house unless it was for a birthday party. Even chocolate milk wasn't chocolate milk in my house we had Ovaltine. Only when I'd go to my grandpa's house would I get the real stuff of chocolate milk (good memories). We ate a lot of soup, a lot of vegetable soup. So because of my mom I love...no really love to eat healthy, and I say Thank you mom!
Now let's fast forward now I'm married with children and my dear husband is the opposite (I guess opposites attract) so it's been more of a challenge on eating healthy mostly on the grocery budget, with a family of 6. As of late though I have been enjoying these fantastic smoothies.
They are called The Green Monster...and I am in love. I got them from here  http://ohsheglows.com/  by far my favorite blog. When you have time check her out.
Here is the recipe...perfect for days I don't want to bring out the juicer and just use my blender. I did alter the recipe a little to my liking.

Green Monster

1 cup almond milk ( I use chocolate almond milk some times)
1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed
1 tablespoon of almond butter
1 banana
3 big frozen strawberries
2 handfuls of organic spinach

Blend together until all blended and mmmmm enjoy

Another thing that I have been enjoying is fruit salsa.....best dessert I have ever had. I went to a tupperware..p.s if you need tupperware check her out... http://joyfulmelody.blogspot.com/2011/11/you-need-tupperwarewell-ive-got-girl.html
So while I was there I learned about this salsa, and now am addicted.

Fruit Salsa

1 apple ..peeled and cored
6-7 strawberries hulled
1 kiwi peeled
1-2 tablespoon of apple jelly

I put it all together in my little chopper
Blend into salsa consistency. Pour into bowls and enjoy with cinnamon sugar pita chips....caution it is so good you might eat a whole bag of pita chips and not realize till you reach the last crumb....just warning you.

I had no idea that Garth Brooks was on to something!

Remember that song years ago by Garth Brooks, Unanswered Prayers, years later I hear that song and think Lord Jesus thank you for not answering those prayers, I used to beg God (as I knew Him) to please help me with the boyfriend who I cared about, I begged God to make it work. Thank you God He did not answer because I would have missed out on the most amazing person ever created by my Lord....My husband.
Are you facing a wall today? A closed door? A resistant person? Usually when difficult situations happen, our natural tendency is to become discouraged and question where is God. But when you’re a believer, you can rest assured that God is in divine control of your life. Just as God uses promotion, breakthroughs, loyal people, encouragement, God also uses disappointments, closed doors, betrayals and persecution to move us toward His divine plan.
God knows how to get you where you need to be. When you understand everything in your life is divinely orchestrated, and God controls the whole universe, then you will begin to view adversity and unanswered prayers in a different way. You will begin to see that things don’t happen to you, they happen for you. God has a reason for everything happening in your life and has a plan to prosper you in all things. You can trust Him to do things His way. You be disappointed or discouraged, because the greatest gift that God has planned for you is right around the corner!

Your body is a 10 but your face is a 6?

That's right you read it right. That's what a young man said to me when I was growing up. I was 14 and was talking to a boy who I had a major crush on. While he was telling me about how he thought Mariah Carey was a 10 all around he decided to tell me what his opinion of me was (Isn't that precious). He had no idea what that did to me for years. Beauty.. so interesting what people consider beautiful. Just take the world's view for instance. Take a moment and go to the mall, turn on the t.v, open a magazine, the world is screaming what their opinion is, that beautiful people have it all. that those who aren't should feel inferior. Isn't it interesting how the same people who are feeding you your insecurities are also the same people who promise to sell you beauty whether it be some cream, lotion, pill, latest hair style, or fashion? They don't believe true beauty comes from within, they believe it can be created.
Who can keep up with the world's view of beauty? It's impossible. How do you keep up with something that is flawed and fake. Most cases the beauty they sell is unnatural. Photo shopped to death, with just the right lighting and enhancement. The boy's rating of me when I was 14 stuck with me. Going through high school I was a mess on how I saw myself  (I had no idea of how Christ saw me). I have never had a criticizing spirit towards others (you can ask my husband he always says that I think everyone is beautiful), but when it comes to myself..oh my is all I can say. In high school I was always to trying to keep up, went through eating disorders, and then to the point that I had found myself so useless that I sunk into cutting. I allowed myself to to think so low of myself that it was okay to cut myself to deal with pain in my life. I could have used God's truth about me then don't you think. So I am constantly complimenting people, because I want people to know that they are beautiful, now that I know what true beauty is. I want others to recapture the true beauty in people. I want people to know that true beauty comes from a loving God, and our identity in Christ. We need to not allow our heart and minds absorb what the world says is beautiful but what God thinks is beautiful.

Romans 12:2

New King James Version (NKJV)
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Come on now, God tells us right there "do not be conformed to this world"

Romans 12:2 Phillips version
With eyes wide open to the mercies of God, I beg you, my brothers, as an act of intelligent worship, to give him your bodies, as a living sacrifice, consecrated to him and acceptable by him. Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity.

I love that version.."Do not let the world around you squeeze you into it's own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within" That's right don't squeeze into any ones mold for you, don't allow all the magazines, tv shows, Internet, movies try to squeeze you into their mold. I love the bible because it doesn't only teach you but warns you.

Amplified Bible (AMP)
2 Peter 2
1BUT ALSO there arose false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among yourselves, who will subtly and stealthily introduce heretical doctrines (destructive heresies), even denying and disowning the Master Who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction...oh wait I'll break it down (love bible gateway with all the different versions)

2 Peter 2:1

New American Standard Bible (NASB)
1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. (3) and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
I think we only limit the verse to church but as believers it pertains to society as well, it easily applies to our everyday world. False teachers(advertisers...magazines) introduce "new" ways of thinking that are destructive. Their motives...simply put greed! We are warned not to follow these people with their latest diets, latest self improvements...which honest can be hard when you see those before and after shots. This verse also warns against becoming distorted because we follow a lifestyle that is contrary to the beauty God desires. I once wrote about Eve you can read it here, when God got really serious with me and changed the way I thought of myself .

The bible is full of beautiful women who used their beauty for God's purpose. Esther of  course is the first to come to mind. She was chosen by the king simply by her beauty. Did she exploit it? Use it for her own gain, modeling, reality show..lol..no she used her beauty to obey the calling in her life. For instance you look at women  now example Kim Kardashian beautiful young lady who has taken her beauty and misplaced it. So sad. Reminds me of Delilah who used her beauty selfishly to destroy a man. Do not allow the world to tell you who you should be, and I'm also not saying don't ever care how you look. Or that make up is evil (Lord knows I like me some make up) but balance is what we need. First know who we are in Christ, that the more we resemble Him and His heart the more beautiful we will become. We have a higher authority sitting at the right hand of the father who knocks down the world's words with his truths. He tells us that we are beautiful, and captivating and that He takes delight in us, that He will quiet us with His love, and that He rejoices over us with singing (Zeph 3:17) The Lord says in John15:16 "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last." We didn't choose Him but He chose us, not because He thinks we are prettier then anyone else, but because He loves us. To Him we are all beautiful, because we are made in his image. Still don't think you are valuable or beautiful, God does, He's captivated by our beauty see

Psalm 45:11

New Living Translation (NLT)
 For your royal husband delights in your beauty;
honor him, for he is your lord.

Psalm 45:11

New International Version (NIV)

 Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;
honor him, for he is your lord.

Doesn't get any better then that my God, the creator of the world (yes the same world that says what I need to be more beautiful) thinks I am that beautiful that He takes delight in me....well I don't know about you but that makes me feel like dancing baby, will you cast off what the world says and dance with me? I hope so.

You are what you eat.....spiritually

Have you ever heard the saying, “You are what you eat?” The same principle is true in our spiritual lives. Our ears and eyes are the gates to our soul. What we watch, what we listen to, and who we associate with are constantly feeding and influencing our inner man, which in turn, influences our actions and destiny.

Psalm 119:37 says, “Keep me from paying attention to worthless things.” David said in Psalm 101:3, “I will set before me no vile thing.” Today more than ever, we have opportunities to feed our minds with the wrong thing. Everywhere we turn, there is information trying to influence us. But Ephesians 4:27 says, “Do not give the enemy a foothold. “ A door of opportunity is opened when we allow negative influences in our lives. What seems as harmless entertainment, a compromising TV show, or a negative song choice eventually influences your thought life. Thoughts lead to actions and actions determine your destiny. Spend time building yourself up, not wasting your time with activities that can tear you down. You are a temple of the Most High God - called, appointed and anointed to do great things. Do your best to keep your temple pure and be selective with what you feed your spirit. As you do your part, God will take you places that you have never imagined. You will reach your full potential and become everything God has created you to be. Feed yourself God's word, meditate on it. Listen to uplifting music, and songs with a positive message. Turn off the tv instead of watching the reality shows, the anti family shows, turn away from the magazines at check out stands that are meant to destroy people instead of encourage. Do not allow the scale to determine your mood, but remind yourself of who you are in Christ, and that you have the victory through Him. I challenge you for 1 week do the above and you will see, and feel an amazing difference. What are you feeding yourself?

Wacky tip for wednesday

                                                   Remember these

The Silly Bandz that all kids including mine were crazy about. Kids had them climbing up their arms, I actually saw one boy with so many they reached his elbow (crazy). Well I don't know if kids are still crazy about them, but because my kids are home the craze lasted about 2 minutes in our house. So now when vacuuming I run into these bandz all over, hiding here and there. I was gong to throw them out but decided to throw them in a junk drawer instead. Well one day I was braiding my daughters hair and forgot to get elastic to tie the bottom atlas I remember hey I have this drawer next to me full of silly bandz, why not give a try. Well they are great. Wouldn't advise using it on large amounts of hair like a pony tail but to tie the end of the braid well I think I got a winner winner chicken dinner. Here is my Beanie baby modeling below our new hair silly bandz.
